A glorious spring day and we made our way 'over the water' to Bromborough Golf Club - which refers to itself as "Wirral's Parkland Jewel" and they're not far wrong.
Despite a clear sunny day, there was a stiff breeze in parts, which made club selection tricky. Also, with a few long par 4's and up hill par 3's, the conditions caught a few players out. However, Kev had a superb round to walk off with a stableford score of 37 points thanks to his usual 'bombing' drives and laser like irons. Couple this with tidy work on what was dry and quick greens, and it was a great all round performance from a lad who is [currently] playing off a handicap of 5. We sense the Handicap Reaper is on his way again! Congratulations Kev on another great win. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
We have played Bromborough 2/3 times previously and have always enjoyed the challenge. Its a tricky course that has a testing layout and some difficult long holes - particularly if there's a decent breeze, as there was for our visit this time around.
The course has some moderate undulation, but nothing too strenuous and there are some beautifully crafted holes here with the standouts for being the par 3 6th hole with the green situated over a huge deep bunkers, the tricky double hazard on the 9th hole and possibly one of the trickiest 18th's you're likely to find that requires accuracy from every shot.
The condition of the course for our visit was superb, with well manicured fairways that were striped and rolled to give a lovely appearance and the tee boxes were all flat and well maintained. The greens were very quick however a fraction uneven paced in parts with some being a little slower than others - which, when the pace is quick [as it was on our visit] is difficult to adjust to. But they are much better than most in the area for this time of year. They were also bone dry due to the recent spell of good, warm weather we have had - and the driest April on record since the mid 90's [we believe].
Some members mentioned they struggled with the Bunkers, as some were a little understocked and firm but nothing that would cause great upset.
The price was competitive for 10:30am Sunday tee times and the staff were all welcoming and pleasant. The prices in the bar were very good and the post round snacks were filling and well priced.
All in all, Bromborough is a club that we enjoy visiting and is one that we continue to recommend to people. If you're looking for a parkland course in the Wirral that offers quality, price and friendliness - this has to be your choice.

Located in a mature part of the Leverhulme Estate at the heart of the Wirral Peninsula, Bromborough is renowned as a hidden gem of a Golf Course and “Wirral’s Parkland Jewel".
For over 100 years golfers have been tackling the distinctive 18 holes that play between 6300 and 6600 yards depending on tees used. The quality of the course can be evidenced by its selection to host the English Amateur Matchplay Championship in 2005, English Men’s Seniors Championship 2003 and Cheshire Matchplay 2010.
The course is notable for its many species of trees, copses and ponds that all add to the visual appeal. USGA standard greens and the year round equable climate provide good playing conditions 12 months of the year with temporary greens very rarely in use.
The holes have been carefully fashioned utilising the natural contours of the land that are gently undulating rather than excessively hilly, with the holes around the turn providing a particularly good test of golf
