Our first society visit to "Wirral's Parkland Jewel", and Bromborough did not disappoint.
A tricky layout meant that scoring was at a premium [as you will see from the finish table below] Kev Murphy continued his very impressive season with another victory, amassing a total of 37 points - which off a handicap of 5 is very good going. Accuracy was paramount and Kevin did this thanks to great course management and club selection. Distance control helped Kev to attack the greens and his short game was on song to ensure he walked away with another 1st place finish. Congratulations. |
review of the day
Bromborough was a course test driven by committee members about 18 months prior to this event so it was nervously hoped that all members agreed that it was worthy of a place on the calendar.
With a nice welcome and decent bacon butty devoured the members paraded to the practice areas for a quick warm up before heading out into the parkland.
The breezy weather was kind with only a ten minute rain shower causing any problems and the shadows from the low sun providing a decent excuse for many missed putts. The course was in great condition with rolling fairways, soft receptive greens that rolled true and well defined tight rough. Even the sodden bunkers played pretty well.
Bromborough sells itself as Wirral's parkland Jewel and it is hard to argue against that. Every hole offers something different. Yardages vary so you have to have all the shots to produce a decent score which is just what the days winner Kev Murphy managed. His 37 points and 4 over gross on a day of low scores seemed to be an easy victory 3 shots ahead of 2nd and 3rd. Even then in the clubhouse he bemoaned leaving a few shots out there. Well done Kev, a good score on a tough course.

Located in a mature part of the Leverhulme Estate at the heart of the Wirral Peninsula, Bromborough is renowned as a hidden gem of a Golf Course and “Wirral’s Parkland Jewel".
For over 100 years golfers have been tackling the distinctive 18 holes that play between 6300 and 6600 yards depending on tees used. The quality of the course can be evidenced by its selection to host the English Amateur Matchplay Championship in 2005, English Men’s Seniors Championship 2003 and Cheshire Matchplay 2010.
The course is notable for its many species of trees, copses and ponds that all add to the visual appeal. USGA standard greens and the year round equable climate provide good playing conditions 12 months of the year with temporary greens very rarely in use.
The holes have been carefully fashioned utilising the natural contours of the land that are gently undulating rather than excessively hilly, with the holes around the turn providing a particularly good test of golf
