SUNDAY 31ST JULY 2016
FIRST TEE: 10:00AM
3-ball winners
andy roper, pete bilson
& peter woolley
Our first team event of 2016 was hosted at the beautiful Wigan Golf Club. Playing 3-man teams, produces some quality banter and also some great scoring with a touch of the pressure being released.
The winning 3 balls were Peter Woolley, Pete Bilson and Andy Roper who finished with a great score of 78 points. Without feeling like they played spectacularly, the team battled hard and put together some impressive scoring - with Peter Bilson and Andy Roper coming in with 36 individual stableford points themselves. The dovetailed beautifully and ensured that the score kept pushing along to take a great victory in wonderful surroundings. Congratulations to the three of them. |
review of the day
We travelled the short distance to Wigan Golf Club for our first three ball team event of 2016. The majority had not visited the club before, despite its close proximity to most members and we were looking forward to seeing what it was all about – and let us tell you, it absolutely did not disappoint.
On arrival, the meandering drive down the country lane to the club house takes you past several of the holes and you get a real feel for the place immediately. The club house is a beautiful old building that is surrounded moat that branches off the canal that runs past the grounds.
We enjoyed a lovely full breakfast before play and found all the staff to be warm, welcoming and attentive. The prices in the bar were good and the cost of our visit for the day was as competitive as we have enjoyed in 2016 and was exactly the enticement to groups and societies that we have been calling for – and a price that encourages us [and other such groups] to return year-on-year.
The course is a beautifully parkland throughout, with the front 9 being more established and mature due to it originally being a 9-hole complex prior to the donation of land from local businessman and huge supporter of all things Wigan, Dave Whelan. The layout is interesting and keeps you thinking without it being too brutal or punishing. The yardage overall is quite short, but don’t let this lull you into thinking it is easy. Ball placement from the tee is paramount and it requires a level of thinking and tactical play to score strongly.
The greens were generally great throughout with a nice pace and a smooth roll. There were a couple that were a bit patchy due to the horrendous winter we have suffered but we were told of this before out visit and they did not affect play at all. The tee boxes and bunkers were well looked after and the fairways were nicely mown, rolled in stripes and cut to rough nicely and were a pleasure to play from. The rough, as it should be, was penal at times but not unplayable. In summary, the course allows for the odd errant shot, but if you want to score well you need to make sure you leave you misses in the right areas otherwise it makes it a tricky day.
For our visit, the scores were very tight throughout – both individually and also in our 3 man teams – with only 8 points separating 1st from last place. The winning team of Peter Woolley, Pete Bilson and Andy Roper nicked it with some solid play throughout without being too spectacular and it was probably due in large part to some really good work around the greens with all players skimming the cup with chips on several occasions, and Peter Woolley sinking a birdie chip over a bunker on the 17th.
Afterwards we sat in the garden behind the clubhouse and overlooked the moat with a few beers and recounted how we all enjoyed our visit and how we would like to make it an annual occurrence due to a number of reasons. Primarily that we enjoy supporting local member courses that don’t over price themselves and offer solid value for money on a well looked after, and interesting course. Well done Wigan Golf Club and we will be back!
