So, after 7 months and 18 previous events we reached our final calendar outing of 2016 [excluding the end of season trip]
We returned to the 'always dry' Leasowe Golf Club on the Wirral coastline on an unusually windless day - unheard of for our previous visits to Leasowe! Scoring was therefore fabulous across the board as the courses natural defence was missing for the day, but one player continued his recent good form by taking his second victory of the season. Great all round play and an improved accuracy from the tee [more often] helped Bez to a wonderful victory with 39 stableford points and a great way to finish what has been another marvellous season. Congratulation. |
review of the day
It’s almost hard to believe that 19 Bunkers events have now passed in 2016 as we headed away from Leasowe with only our end of season trip to the Forest of Arden left to play. Another great season drew to an end on an unusually still and warm day on the Wirral coastline. It’s a rarity to go to Leasowe without a drop of wind and the lack of it meant that the courses natural defence was lowered and in turn this saw some solid scoring across the group.
The course itself is always good in the winter and out of season months – with a links feel and coastline benefit, it takes a lot for water to build up under foot. The course itself played well, but you could see it was the back end of a long golfing season with the greens a little under par, but this has to be expected this late in the year.
As always, the welcome in the pro shop and clubhouse was warm and hospitable and the food and prices at the club were as good as any we have experienced during the season. The cost of the golf too offers a real incentive to keep returning to Leasowe and as a package, it ticks a lot of boxes for society golfers.
There were some really excellent scores and performances and a number of birdies dropped throughout the day. Notable performances for Craig Evans – who was unlucky not to walk away with 6 or 7 birdies on the day with some ‘unfortunate’ lip outs, and Phil Williams who continued his string recent form with another great display of long iron play.
However, the day was won by Chris Berry – who himself is in a rich vein of form as the season draws to a close. The new clubs seem to be helping with consistency and quality around the greens and it was his second victory of the season and was well deserved thanks to some wonderful golf.

A links course situated on the shoreline of the north coast of the Wirral peninsula with superb panoramic views extending from the mountains of North Wales and across Liverpool Bay towards the Lake District. The course is built on well draining sand meaning superb conditions all year round.
Tight fairways with intimidating out of bounds are a feature of the course; this coupled with the greens rated among the best in the area, makes Leasowe a good test of golf for players of all abilities without being too physically demanding.
The course was a favourite of Bunkers members in 2015 and was selected at our AGM to feature again this year.
