We visited Whitefield Golf Club in Manchester on a day of mixed weather and reduced numbers [due to illness, injury and holidays]
A tricky course that is defined by 5 delightful par 3's that could grace any course. They truly decide whether a card is going to be feast or famine. The day was won with an unusually low score - which shows the difficulty of the course but it was a very solid round by Chris. Immense distance off the tee [as always] a good touch around the greens and consistent putting and lagging meant he was able to win by 2 shots even affording to 'blob' two holes. Congratulations to this weeks winner, Chirs Berry [old photo] who had to dart off for a meal with friends without knowing he'd won!! |
review of the day
We visited Whitefield Golf Club with unusually reduced numbers, due a number of factors ranging from injury and illness, to a large number of people on holiday and having been called into work. It just meant that the 16 playing had a great chance of winning.
The day started off sunny and still, and gradually the rain set in before clearing once again to a pleasant afternoon. The 24 hours previous had seen a huge downpour in rain and the course showed signs of this with standing water in places and GUR in play in some bunkers. However, this is entirely understandable given the circumstances.
Whitefield is a nice layout and the standout features are 4 of the par 5’s that are worthy a place on any course in the area. They are a real test of nerve, ability and above all…. luck. Two of them are across ball gobbling ravines where anything short is punished and the other two are a test of absolute accuracy as anything slightly wayward could leave an almost impossible shot onto the green. They really are a lovely feature of the scoring on the course as they can reward or ruin a good round.
However, the conditions of the greens for the visit were a disappointment with them being long, bobbly and uneven in pace. A real downside that impacted on the scores for the day. There was also a lot wear and tear to the tee boxes that were uneven and bare in patches.
Scoring on the day was at a premium and this was one of the few Bunkers events where the winning score was sub 36 points. Chris Berry coming out deserved winner with 34 point [including two blobs] after a really solid and impressive round of golf. Distance has never been an issue off the tee with Chris, but with the new clubs he seems to have found more direction and consistency and this being in play is helping him score strongly.
Special note must go to Marc Lloyd for his 5-point birdie on the 6th hole where he used his two shots well to fly up the scoreboard. Lee Carroll must have thought that on the 10th tee he was in with a chance of a maiden victory as he had 21 points and a solid opening 9 holes. But a disappointing back 9 saw him to 4th place overall and beaten into the prize places on a card playoff due to his collapse on the back 9 holes. However, a really great effort on the Par 3 competition saw him walk off with a net score of -3 for the 5 holes. A great achievement given how tough they were [as mentioned above]
A tough day at the office for Andy Roper saw him walk off after 13 holes due to suffering illness all week and he was well below his normal self all day long. However, even tougher was the round endured by Rob Botterill who didn’t seem to get going until the back 9 and had a round he will quickly want to erase from the memory banks. Chin up mate.

Whitefield Golf Club came highly recommended to the society by the manager at Lee Park, Steve Settle. As a result, the committee went for a 'test run' in late October 2015 [and on a brutal day of rain and wind] and found the course to be a superb set up.
The par 3's are as good a collection of holes as you are likely to see and one in particular is a 200+ yard beast over a large ravine. However, on top of this, the course has an interesting layout that will challenge all of our members and all handicaps. There is a bit of something for everyone and consistency and solid/straight play is rewarded well on Whitefields undulating track.
The greens are renowned for being slick and on a par with Lee Park, and the parkland course will offer a good test of golf for the society on what should be another superb day out.
