We returned to one of our favourite clubs at Warrington G.C following some horrendous recent weather. Despite a 5 minute torrential downpour, the day was kind and one player made the most of the still conditions.
Shooting 40 points of a handicap of 4 is never easy, but Kev produced a superb all around performance to finish level pass gross [and he was 2 under on the 18th tee by the way!] A fabulous golfing exhibition from tee to green gave Kev a 1 point victory of a chasing field and the wonderful trophy donated by the club. Congratulations to Kev Murphy on a tremendous victory. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
Over the last couple of years, Warrington Golf Club has fast become one of our member’s favourite places to visit.
A fabulously warm welcome is always followed by a great day’s golf on one of the best manicured courses in the North West. On top of that, the layout of the 18 holes are a delight to play and there is something for everyone.
On arrival, we enjoyed a selection a lovely snack that was served by very welcoming staff before making our way to the great practice and warm up facilities.
The course was in superb condition – particularly considering the appalling weather in the week prior to our visit, where we had experienced pretty much non-stop torrential rain and heavy winds. Some of the bunkers were a touch compacted, but only a couple were genuinely G.U.R and the remainder of the course had drained well and was presented wonderfully [as we have come to expect at Warrington]
The tee boxes are always large, flat and rolled with stripes that just provide that extra touch of class. The greens were receptive but not boggy and played quick and true despite the aforementioned weather. The subtle breaks and tricky hole placements caught a few of our society out and combined with the unexpected pace of the ball, it made the course even more challenging.
The course meanders through a lovely parkland setting and is quite undulating in parts without being too penal on the legs. There are several stand out holes, but we always love the 7th [Steeple] where you look down from a heavily elevated tee over the hole and the surrounding county in the background.
The refreshing thing about Warrington GC is that despite all its quality and class, they charge a fair price for a midweek round of golf. This is something a lot of other ‘premium’ clubs could learn from and contrary to the misconception that it would encourage a poorer class of golfer/clientele, it would simply ensure that the course is enjoyed by a wider base of golfers who would learn and respect the expectations of these clubs. Golfers aren’t universally stupid and shouldn’t be treated as such – which a lot of other ‘top end’ clubs can do. Well done Warrington for remaining inclusive to a wider spectrum of keen golfers!
We’ve said it before, but if Warrington was just 10 miles closer to where we all live it would be a club we would probably all look to join. It’s that good and is worth a visit from any keen golfer – we cannot recommend it enough. We will be back in 2018, without a doubt!

Warrington Golf Club was voted as Bunkers Golf Society members as their favourite course visited in 2015, and so it was with little persuasion that we have looked to revisit this year. The Club was founded in 1903 and is located on the south side of the town. Being positioned at the highest point in Warrington, it affords fine views of the local area as well as the Pennines and Welsh hills.
The course measures 6,211 yards, par 71 for men and is a fair and enjoyable test for any level of golfer. The superb drainage makes play possible for 52 weeks of the year. The course is renowned for being kept in immaculate condition and having lush and spongy fairways with superbly manicured greens that are a joy to play on.
If you have played Warrington you will need little or no persuasion regarding the merits of the course. Warrington Golf Club is a traditional parkland/heathland course established in 1903. At 6211 yards from the white tees, it's a true test of golfing skill. The course's main defences are the greens, which are regularly amongst the best in the country and the views from the 7th tee are stunning.
