We headed 'over the water' to "The Home of Stableford" to play at the wonderful Wallasey Golf Club.
Golf doesn't come much trickier than the conditions we found on the day. A stern wind for the entire round, saw some holes playing 3 or 4 clubs stronger than usual. This combined with the extremely penal rough - that saw balls lost that landed just 3 or 4 feet off the fairway - made it a really difficult test of golf for all of the players; possibly the hardest test we have played as a society! It was always going to take a special round of golf to win at Wallasey and John Morrison pieced together a wonderful 18 holes. He plotted his way around the course and didn't 'go after shots' - which was definitely the way to go. His short game was tidy and putting was solid on the carpet like greens. His first Bunkers victory and probably one of the most deserving given the extremely tough conditions. Congratulations John on a great round of golf. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
The first thing to say is....Wallasey Golf Club is hard. Its as simple as that. There is very rarely a day you will visit where the wind is still and this is what links golf is all about. However, in conjunction with this wind is the brutal rough set up at the course. We`ve played links golf all over the U.K and at lots of the top venues we have to offer [including Birkdale, Hillside, Hoylake, Conwy and around Scotland. However, Wallasey is right up there with the very toughest.
Theres no two ways about it, Wallasey is a fabulous golf club. Steeped in history and tradition [after all it is the founding place of Stableford scoring] and the course is absolutely immaculate and a real beautiful setting. The greens were probably the finest we have played on this year, and that includes all three courses at Gleneagles.
Bunkers were lush and well maintained and the course was in pristine condition. Tee boxes were all flat, well tendered and in good order and in terms of the course appearance - it couldn`t be faulted.
Our only real criticism was the length of the rough and the proximity of the longer rough to the edge of the fairways. Lots of our society are lovers of links golf and can appreciate that its biggest defence on a still day is the rough. You need to be accurate and plan the course to score well. However, in one particular fourball they had several shots that landed literally 3-6 feet form the edge of the fairway and were lost forever. In that group, The highest in that group was 11 and the lowest was 6...so we would consider it a fair and experienced group of amateurs. Yet, all commented in the round that they spent far too much time searching [often without success] for balls that in all truthfulness, should have been found. It extends the length of the round [in terms of time] and it made players feel a little disheartened if truth be told. There really is no necessity for it to be so penal.
That said, it is without doubt one of the best links tracks in the area and the reception from the club and staff was friendly and welcoming - as indeed were the members who all seemed to say "hello" and welcome us to the club. Prices in the club were fair and the food was ample and tasty.

Wallasey is currently voted as 3rd best course in Cheshire and 60th best course in the UK. It is famous as being "The Home of Stableford" - the scoring system used by all golfers that was devised here in 1932.
Wallasey is a classic links, originally designed by Tom Morris Snr., but with many later alterations influenced by such illustrious names as Hilton, Hawtree and James Braid. Recent improvements were designed by Donald Steel. Most of the course is played through sand dunes, with few flat lies on tight, running fairways. The greens are firm and fast, and constant sea breezes make clubbing difficult. Wallasey provides a stern but fair challenge, and is a superb test of golf for players of any standard.
Wallasey was a Final Qualifying course for the Open Championship when it returned to Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) in 2006 and is regarded as one of the finest courses in the area.
