VALE ROYAL ABBEY
SUNDAY 24TH JULY 2016
FIRST TEE: 12:00PM
2016 champion
ste holmes
Our 3rd Major of the 2016 season took us to Vale Royal Abbey in Cheshire for "The Wide Open" sponsored by our friends and partners at www.teeuplo.co.uk
The course was set up tough due to the club championship taking place the same weekend and some of the pin positions were extremely difficult to say the least - couple that with super slick greens and it took a great performance to win on the day. Ste Holmes did this with relative accuracy from the tee and by plotting his way around the hazards of the course. Tidy work on and around the greens ensured he won his first Bunkers event to take the title with a great score on the day of 35 stableford points. Congratulations Ste. |
REVIEW OF THE DAY
Vale Royal Abbey was one of the favourite courses of 2015 and we returned on a Sunday this year for the third Major event of our 2016 season, The Wide Open. Unfortunately the title won by Chris Warbrick last year was undefended on this tough Cheshire track.
Tough scoring was once again the order of the day with the majority of the field finishing in the high 20's. Experience of the course would probably assist with better course management but to post a score that was in with a chance every part of you game would have to be on song. Accuracy of the tee was paramount and 'plotting' your way around the 18 holes rather than brute force was the order of the day.
Ste Holmes came in with a great knock of 35 and genuinely seemed surprised that he was a Major Champion. Given the circumstances of the win he will be made up but steady play and decent putting saw him pip Stu Seddon in a card play off. Perhaps lack of sleep will feature in more of Ste's future rounds. Well done Ste and well deserved. A victory for all the driver haters out there - Viva "The Housewife".
