THURSDAY 20TH APRIL 2017
FIRST TEE: 10:33AM
winning team
andy roper, chris parrish
& pete bilson
Our first team event of 2017 was held at the fabulous Stockport Golf Club. Originally planned as a pairs event, it changed to 3-man teams due to a late injury and these 3 lads took full advantage, in what is a brilliant format of the game.
1 of their scores taken on the front 6 holes, 2 of their scores taken on the middle 6 and all 3 scores had to count on the final 6 holes of the course. They walked off with a tremendous total of 82 points to obliterate the field and take the top spot. Great golf all round with all 3 players playing some great stuff at various parts of their rounds. With 4 birdies in the round and solid scoring throughout by all 3 it was a well deserved win on what is a very tricky [and tight] golf course. Congratulations. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
Having never been to the club before, we were aware it was regarded as a real top draw local course and had been used for Open regional qualifying. However, it even surpassed what we were expecting from it.
It is genuinely one of the finest parkland courses we have had the pleasure to play - if not THE finest.....and thats in April!!!
Despite some issues going on at the entrance to the club [that we am 100% aware were totally out of the clubs control] we were delighted with the warm welcome and friendliness of the staff - who could not apologies enough [including several members] for what was happening outside. The club basically had travellers who had arrived on site overnight and were refusing to leave until demands were met - which prompted Police and bailiff intervention. However, as mentioned, this should not at all leave a sour taste due to the disgraceful actions of people outside of the clubs hands.
The layout of the course is beautiful. It's undulating without being a punishing walk, and the course is cut wonderfully into the natural land and each hole has something different to offer. However, it's main defence are the tight tree lined fairways and accuracy from the tee is paramount if you want to score well. Anything offline and you are 'chopping' out sideways and "taking your medicine".
The condition of the course was magnificent. Carpet like fairways, well tendered bunkers and the grass was all immaculately cut and presented. The greens were a touch early in the season and hollow tining had obviously taken place a couple of weeks earlier but they still ran quickly and very true and for mid April our members were very pleased with them.
The food was excellent and offered superb value and the bar was reasonably priced and staff were attentive and friendly.
In summary, Stockport is a club we will undoubtedly with greater regularity and we will be hoping to go back in 2018.
