Bunkers went to Romiley Golf Club for the first time and enjoyed another splendid day of great weather.
The course played very tricky with a tight layout that demanded accuracy on most shots from tee to green. Once on the dance floor, the greens were slick and quick with subtle undulations that made putting pretty treacherous for those who never mastered them early in the round. Step forwards Craig Masters. A great round from tee to green with steady play and plotting his way around the course. A fabulous back 9 secured the victory - his first since joining the society at the start of our 2017 season. Congratulations to Craig on a fabulous maiden victory. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
Romiley GC was booked on the `word of mouth` of a friend and their words were "its a tight little course that punishes anything wayward". They weren`t far wrong.
Its a tricky layout with lots of out of bounds and hazards that run parallel with the fairways and anything slightly off line is gobbled up. The course is mature and tree lined and again anything that isn`t kept within the confines of the fairway and you find yourself chipping out sideways. This clearly makes Romiley a real challenge for all handicaps and keeps the game interesting throughout.
The course was in good condition with the fairways well defined and the bunkers all well tended to. The greens were slick and quick for early May and there were very subtle breaks that caught a few of us out but they played well and were a consistent pace.
The course is quite undulating without being to punishing on the legs and its probably one of those venues where you think "I wouldn`t play that hole the same way again" - so prior knowledge would be useful, and it should be noted that the course planner on the clubs website is very useful in helping plot your way around the 18 holes.
It was great value for our society visit and club house was fairly priced and in keeping with the great value of the full day. The club were supremely warm in their welcome, both in the booking process and on the day of our visit and even appointed a long standing club member to 'meet and greet' us in the clubhouse and provide a brief overview of the club and the course - a nice touch!
In summary, Romiley Golf Club is a well run club that offers great value on a very good course and is definitely a club worth visiting and I'm sure we will do again in the future.
