SUNDAY 28TH AUGUST 2016
FIRST TEE: 10:30AM
2016 champion
kev murphy
Our final Major of the 2016 was The Bunkers Invitational and was held at Preston Golf Club - which had been voted a firm favourite with our members in 2015.
Despite some appalling weather in the days building up to our visit, the course was in great condition and the sun put its hat on for our event [it always shines on the righteous!] Kev Murphy took the victory with a superb knock of 4 over gross - shooting 37 Stableford Points. Accuracy off the tee was critical to give him a chance of scoring and Kev took full advantage when he found himself on the fairways - hitting over 60% of the greens in his round. A deserving winner, and the 2016 Bunkers Invitational Champion. Congratulations Kev Murphy. |
REVIEW OF THE DAY
Our final Major of the season was held at the fabulous Preston Golf Club. It was a firm favourite of the society following a great visit there in 2015 and it didn’t disappoint once again.
In the days leading up to our visit, the weather had been atrocious and there were fears that the course would be boggy and possibly even closed, particularly after thunderstorms the night before. However, credit must go to the ground staff who had the place in fantastic order with very little evidence of the appalling weather suffered.
The greens were receptive and offered a smooth and slick putt and the surrounds, aprons and approaches to all of the greens were well maintained and made them very easy on the eye with their emerald green appearance. The bunkers were all raked and well stocked, the fairways were a touch wet under foot in places, but nothing that would be cause for concern [it just meant a few yards of ‘run’ were lost on tee shots]
The course is a fabulously mature parkland with the holes cut into the natural contours of the land and it certainly is a fair walk! There are some spectacular looking holes with elevated tees and greens being a key feature of a large number of the holes [particularly the middle 6 holes of the course] and it is a true test of golf. Despite being generously wide fairways for the most part, the rough is penal – especially when wet – and keeping your ball on the short stuff is the order of the day.
Once again, we were looked after very well by the staff with a beautiful Full breakfast on arrival and a large plateful of pie and chips to finish. One thing I will say about the course is that it is very quiet on a Sunday and its almost ‘millionaires golf’ with very few patrons to be seen around the place – which has its advantages and disadvantages I guess.
On the day, there was some great golf – and some not so great golf [particularly from the committee members!] Kevin Murphy took the victory and the 2016 champions title with a superb score of 37 points [4 over gross]. With 60% plus average on fairways found and greens in regulations, it is probably this accuracy that provided Kev with the foundation for a great victory.
Sadly, the same cannot be said of Steve Evans and Andy Roper – who had a joint bout of ‘the shanks’ on the range beforehand and although Andy didn’t carry that onto the course, like Steve…..he did seem to be playing with left handed clubs because after a solid start he capitulated to an embarrassing back 9 consisting of only 8 points!
Special mention to Paul Davies JNR who struck a majestic eagle on the Par 5 6th hole. A solid drive and a 230 yard 3-wood took him to the fringe at the back of the green and he dropped a 25-foot putt for a monumental eagle.

Currently ranked the 20th best course in Lancashire, Preston Golf Club was a firm favourite amongst Bunkers members in 2015 and ranked in the top 3 courses we played - therefore a revisit was always on the cards.
The legendary golf course architect and former Open winner, James Braid lent his Midas touch to the design of Preston Golf Club, and even if you didn't already know this, you may well guess as the course exhibits all the traditional trademarks of a classic Braid design. The Fifer's plans were laid out on some fabulous parkland in 1892 - making it one of the oldest courses in the region - just a stone's throw from Preston and provides a sound test of golfers for all levels of player.
At 6312 yards from the tee on the first hole to the pin on the eighteenth, it is also a nice length for those looking for a leisurely round but we a good test of their golfing ability.
Additionally, Preston have superb practice facilities including a 16 bay driving range
