Our first society visit to Prenton Golf Club turned out to be a great experience of another lovely local course.
The layout didn't require strength and distance, more a case of course management and accuracy. It was a course that required some thought and rewarded players who left the ball in the right areas and missed in the best places. On the day, one player provided all of this and was a very worthy winner. With 19 points on both front and back 9's, he finished with a superb score of 38 points to take the win. A solid display of ball striking, coupled with tidy short game work and good, confident putting on the lovely smooth greens gave Phil a well deserved win. Congratulations on a great performance. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
This was our first society visit to Prenton Golf Club and one that was eagerly anticipated as we had heard positive things about the place and the layout of the course - and it didn't disappoint.
The course offers something a little different to a lot of places out there in that it requires brains over brute force and lots of the holes require solid course management rather than monster drives - in fact, the big stick remained in most players bags at Prenton that most other clubs we've visited.
The first hole is as tricky a tee shot as you'll probably encounter, which sets the tone for the course. Its a real risk reward hole where the pin is only 230 yards away but the risk of 'out of bounds' to the left, water to the right, and a brook running the width of the fairway at about the 185 yard mark offer enough fear for your first shot to make you play sensible...or at least it should do!
The course was in great condition with nicely manicured and rolled fairways, a defined rough and green aprons that were well tendered. The greens themselves were pleasure to play on. True and smooth with a fair pace to them and enough subtle breaks to keep your attention. They were excellent quality and considering how competitive the price was for the club, we thought it offered superb value. Something which a lot of other clubs could learn from. The result was that the clubhouse and the course were bustling with golfers [without being overly crowded we must add] and the whole place had a real buzz to it - which was great to see.
On arrival, several of us enjoyed food in the clubhouse that was plentiful and offered good value and the general prices in the clubhouse were very competitive. The members and staff at the club were extremely warm and welcoming and it had been a pleasure to deal with the club throughout the booking process for the society.
In summary, Prenton Golf Club feels like a real 'find'. A place that will have us coming back again in the future - both with the society and as individuals for our social golf. Its definitely worth a visit for any society or avid golfer who's after a lovely parkland course that doesn't break the bank!
