We returned back to the wonderful Lee Park Golf Club in Liverpool for a team format day.
The sun was shining, the course was immaculate and those greens....oh those greens [see the review below] The team format was 3 players with the 1st 6 holes requiring one of their scores, the 2nd 6 holes needing 2 scores and the final 6 holes needing all 3 players to score. One team adapted to the conditions best and worked solidly in unison to take the victory on the day with a great score of 73 points - when 4 of the 6 teams shot 68 points! Congratulations to Bobby Barrow, Allan Gannon and Martin Orme on a superb victory. |
CLUB & COURSE REVIEW
Lee Park Golf Club have always been very generous to Bunkers Golf Society. They’ve hosted our Last Man Standing competition previously and several of our members joined the club as members in one guise or another.
It’s always been a well-run club with a great ethos. It’s certainly the friendliest club that I have visited and every member of staff makes the effort to remember names and engage in conversation on every visit – which is a lovely trait. On top of this, the club produces the very best from the land that it has been given.
Put simply, it is currently in the finest condition that we have ever seen it. The course looks immaculate from tee to green – and the later are still the star of the show and would not be out of place on ANY golf course in the U.K. They are fabulous. More about that shortly.
On arrival, we were greeted by manager Steve Settle and had a bite to eat in the clubhouse. The food was superb value for money and the portions were large and very tasty. We then went out onto the putting green and upgraded practice area consisting of a chipping area, bunker and 2 practice nets – this in addition to the short practice ground that allows up to about 130 yard shots.
On to the 1st tee and the sun was pouring down on the course and showing it in its best light. Lush green fairways that were all well mown and defined cuts of rough that were striped to give an even greater appeal on the eye. Mid-summer and the course was in full bloom with the trees, foliage and flowers all helping to make the fairways look even tighter from each of the tee boxes.
On to these greens…on the notice board it told us that they were measuring between 11 and 12 on ‘the stimp’ and it’s fair to say that they rolled quicker and truer than anything we have played on in 2017. In fact, we would go as far as to say that they are the best greens we have visited this year, if not the last couple of seasons. They are immaculate and having been to the club hundreds of times they are probably as well as we have ever seen them. Putting on them [when we got used to the pace] was a dream. Send the ball on the chosen line and it didn’t deviate with a constant and true roll.
The course is pretty easy going and flat, but is by no means easy. The main defence is the tight layout and the final 4 or 5 holes – especially in a team competition where all three players scores in each team had to count – meant that it sorted the men from the boys. For anyone thinking Lee Park is an easy test of golf [which could be the misconception when simply looking at the layout] the proof was in the scoring on the day – with 4 of the 6 teams all finishing on 68 points [where 72 points would be par] and the top score being 73.
Afterwards we enjoyed a 2 course meal, a few beers and again the warmth and friendliness of the staff and members in the clubhouse. The day cost £35 per man, which on a Saturday afternoon is supreme value.
In summary, Lee Park has always been a club we have really enjoyed and felt we have a strong relationship with. We like the way they operate and they share similar values to how we like to operate as a society. However, on this return visit, we were blown away by the improvements the club have made and the high standards that are being kept. The one constant is the people and the friendly nature – but making this whole thing “just work” isn’t a fluke. It’s hard work and people who are proud of what they are trying to achieve and long may that continue. It’s fair to say, a few people will probably back joining in 2018 and that’s the biggest compliment we can give.

Lee Park Golf Club was founded in the early 1950’s, as at that time it was extremely difficult for Jewish golfers to obtain admission to a private golf club. In view of this situation, the Merseyside Jewish Golfing Society made efforts to find land and build their own course.
Lee Park Golf Club was eventually founded in 1954 and the course, designed by Frank Pennink of C. K. Cotton & Co, was progressively extended from 6 to 9 and then 18 holes.
These days, Lee Park is known as the friendliest golf club in Merseyside - and through years of links between them and Bunkers Golf Society, we can safely say that this is the case.
The course also has some of the finest greens you will find anywhere in this part of the country, and this includes all of the marque courses on Englands golf coast.
Another first in the clubs history was in July 1957 when John Lennon and his group, The Quarry Men, made their first paid appearance in Lee Park's clubhouse. The owner of the Cavern club, Alan Sytner, was a member of Lee Park, and following their appearance booked them for skiffle sessions at the Cavern. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr joined the group shortly afterwards to become the Beatles and the rest, as they say, is history!
