On a lovely summer's day the society headed to "England's Golf Coast" - Southport - to play the beautiful Hesketh Golf Club.
The hot sun had build up over several days before our visit, and continued for our 18 holes. However, it wasn't just the weather that was hot, with the average scores on the day being very impressive and some great performances. With the winner on the day shooting his best ever round of 5 over gross it gives you an indication of what was needed to take the win. After a few months of him struggling with his game - following some huge advances in the last couple of years - it was good to see him back to some winning form and playing some excellent golf. Finishing with a superb score of 40 stableford points and a solid performance throughout with some lovely pure golf strikes was Kevin Givnan. Congratulations. |
review of the day
Like many other enthusiastic members of the superb Bunkers Golf Society and having never visited the club before, I arrived at the prestigious Hesketh Golf Club with a great sense of anticipation. The recent warm, dry conditions we hoped would enable us to see the course just about at its very best.
After the traditional greetings, ribbing and general banter - which included many congratulations to Ben Warden who had seen his handicap reduced very dramatically after some outstanding knocks at his previous home club, North West National - it was time for the routine pep talk from the President, followed by the draw to establish who played with whom and in what order. Then, for most, it was out for a session on the practice putting green and off to the first tee.
The course was an interesting combination of parkland, heathland and links golf. It was very nice indeed with attractive holes which in most cases beautifully kept. Only one or two areas of GUR taking the shine off slightly what might otherwise have been regarded as an immaculate layout. The greens were a touch disappointing for our visit [surprisingly] and were a bit inconsistent in pace and several being quite bobbly. However, this never took away from some excellent scoring and a very enjoyable day out.
Surprisingly scoring for most was good with only three players from a field of 18, recording scores of less than 30 points, and 6 players shooting in excess of 36 points - and therefore, shooting their handicap.
Special mention must go to Chris Warbrick for his play on the final hole see's him added to the Eagle Club. A wonderful drive left him with approximately 210 yards to the pin and a majestic 5 iron left him a mere 8 to 10 feet away from the flag on the green. He rolled in a beautiful putt to walk off with a birdie-eagle finish and a 3rd place finish.
Dan Alexander will rue a couple of missed opportunities despite a wonderful knock of 39 points as he was pipped to his maiden victory by a very accomplished golfer and winner on the day, Kevin Givnan. Finishing with 40 points and after a few poor scores over recent months, Kevin will be delighted to finally 'get back on track'. More pleasing will have been the quality of strike with all clubs in the bag. Majestic driving from the tee gave him every opportunity to capitalise and he did - thanks to crisply struck irons all afternoon.

Hesketh is currently voted as 14th best course in Lancashire and is the oldest golf club in Southport, established in 1885. The course is pre-dominantly links in nature and Championship golf has been played at Hesketh from the early days.
In addition to being a qualifying venue when The Open is played at nearby Royal Birkdale, Hesketh has hosted many other professional and amateur championships. Most recently, it hosted the Junior Open in 2008 and co-hosted the Amateur Championship with near-by Hillside in 2011.
The course, which is situated at the northern end of the Merseyside sand dune system, presents a challenge to all standards of golfer. Whilst pre-dominantly a links course, changes over recent years have led to the course now having a slightly more diverse landscape for seaside golf.
Two holes to the extreme west of the course (6 & 7) border on a nationally renowned bird reserve where
winter visitors are rewarded by seeing great flocks of migrating geese, swans and wading birds. All year round though there is an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna for all golfers to enjoy.
