Despite Haydock Park GC being close to pretty much all of our members, it was surprisingly a club that not many had actually played.
This made for a tricky days golf, especially due to the mature treelined fairways and the sticky, deep rough which grabbed hold of any wayward shots. Scoring was therefore at a premium and the winner on a card playoff was Phil Williams - to secure his 2nd win in the last 4 outings. Keeping the ball in play was the order of the day, and Phil excelled at this to ensure he took another superb victory at this lovely local course. Congratulations. |
review of the day
Our first visit to Haydock Park Golf Club with the society – which is a surprise given that the majority of our members live so close to the course. We were greeted with pleasant playing conditions, being warm and clear but after a few days’ rain in the build-up the thick, sticky rough was extra punishing.
Haydock Park is a course originally designed by James Braid and the third oldest in Lancashire, and it’s clear to see this history along all 18 holes. It is extremely mature with dense tree lined fairways that are waiting to punish any wayward shots. This coupled with the earlier mentioned rough made accuracy the key to scoring well on the day. It may seem obvious – and some people may argue that’s entirely the general rule in golf – but if you’re out of position at Haydock you can’t often manufacture shots to find your ball on the greens in regulation. You take your medicine, get back in play, and work from there.
The greens were good for the time of year, but we suspect they may have been better during the peak months – but still nothing to complain about. The general condition and appearance of the course was great, with emerald green grass merging into deep, mature parkland. The bunkers were well tendered to, and the condition of the tee boxes throughout were fine.
The day came down to two card play-off battles, that for third place which was won by Craig Evans and then a tussle to take the victory between Phil Williams and Pete Bilson. Phil came out on top with a stronger finish to the day and took his second victory in the space of four events and a good recent run of form continues. Pete can’t be too disappointed as his solid debut season continues and he will no doubt find himself on the end of the handicap secretaries wrath.
Much amusement was had as Dave Ashely romped last place to take the much disliked toilet seat and found himself happily smiling on Bunkers Wall of Shame. Having both the President and Captain in the bottom four positions gave the lads plenty of ammunition in the clubhouse over their post round meal of gammon, egg and chips which went down a storm. The day offered decent value for money without being outstanding at £35 per man [midweek] and the prices in the club house were fair.
