After a wonderful season at Grange Park Golf Club - the hosts of our 2016 Last Man Standing Competition - the society visited as a group for our season finale.
The weather was kind, the course was immaculate [as it has been all season] and the golf was fiercely contested, as always. After 4 seasons as Captain, it didn't seem right that Steve Evans would hand over the reigns to a new incumbent at the end of 2016 without having ever won a Bunkers event. That long awaited drought finally finished in style at Grange Park thanks to a great knock, on what is always a very demanding course. All those weeks "on tour" have finally paid off. Congratulations Steve on a well deserved, and overdue, victory! |
review of the day
24 of us arrived at this lovely parkland layout on a bright and breezy early autumn morning. We were welcomed warmly by the professional and shown to the private, upper dining room where we enjoyed a substantial and very tasty bacon barm with our tea and coffee. After the customary pre-competition notices and information re shared, the draw was made to establish the groups.
With our allotted tee time fast approaching, many made their way downstairs to continue their individual preparations on the putting green or in the practice net before walking the short distance to the first tee for a group photo to record our society's visit.
Approximately four hours later players unanimously agreed that the course was in excellent condition throughout. Fairways were mown attractively and edged with several grades of rough. The greens were superbly true and with the impact of recent rain, not terrifyingly fast.
The consensus was that the course offered a delightful balance between challenge and enjoyment and always rewarded good shot making. Initial post round drinks were consumed - with much banter - in the comfortable spike bar before we were invited to move upstairs once again where we were served a delicious two course meal consisting of individual, home baked steak and kidney pie with roast potatoes and peas followed by apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Portions were generous and were sufficient to satisfy our hungry party!
This is a fine club which is home to a delightful course with excellent facilities, courteous and friendly members and obliging, professional staff.
We will certainly be back!
The scores on the day ranged from a laughingly poor 18 points to an impressive 37 points which earned for the Captain, Steve Evans, a long awaited first win with the society! Others who impressed were Alan Gunn with 35 points and Brendan Smith with 34 points.

Grange Park Golf Club are our kind hosts for the 2016 Last Man Standing Competition and we have booked a full society event at this beautiful local course to ensure everyone has the chance to play one of our local gems. We would encourage ALL MEMBERS to make a concerted effort to play this event as a way of showing our appreciation to the club for their support and help during 2016.
If you have played Grange Park you will need little or no persuasion regarding the merits of their Championship Course. Grange Park Golf Club is a traditional parkland course set in the industrial town of St Helens, but you wouldn't know it; neither would you realise that the Club was established in 1891. Set between a row of houses, a golfing oasis opens to reveal a well contoured course that has some beautiful holes.
At 6496 yards from the medal tees, it's a true test of golfing skill. The course's main defence are the greens, which are regularly amongst the best in the county and the views from the highest points of the course are stunning. The reputation of Grange Park is that it is a superbly manicured and maintained course - and we have found this to be more than true on the visits we have conducted as part of our negotiations with the club to host LMS2016.
We stand by our findings that all members will thoroughly enjoy the test at Grange Park and the carpet like greens, and beautiful carpet like fairways will no doubt see numerous positive reviews.
