Delamere Forest Golf Club was a course that high on the list of 'must play' for most members - and its reputation proceeded it.
A day of mixed weather, from sunny and pleasant to windy, wet and even sleet/snow - however, it couldn't spoil a tremendous days golf on one of the North Wests most beautiful courses. The winner on the day shot his 'best round ever' and with his GAMEGOLF stats showing at 70% fairway accuracy and Greens in Regulation it was fair to say he was on to a winner. The putter was also on fire as he lagged exceptionally to leave himself gimmes on most holes. It finished with an exceptional score of 43 Stableford points and his first win in a long time for the Chairman, Andy Roper. |
review of the day
The first Bunkers midweek event of 2016 was one that many were really excited about. Delamere Forest has a reputation and it lived up to it magnificently.
A beautiful location, steep climbs and descents, a good mix of long and short par 4's and perfect fairways and slick greens meant that whatever your personal score this could only be a good day. Even a mini hail storm only added to the enjoyment. The course ticked every box as the beautifully manicured fairways led to the finest greens of the year so far [and it will do well for anywhere to beat them in the remainder of 2016]. They were slick, smooth and had lovely subtle breaks. Start the ball on your chosen line and it stuck and glided towards the cup.
There were some notable achievements on the day with Chris Parrish eagling with a wedge from just shy of 80 yards - one bounce on the green and the ball dropped into the hole. A wonderful shot.
Not to be outdone, the President Dave Ashley hit his 2nd shot into a green side bunker on the Par 5 7th hole, only to splash out a beautiful sand shot that zipped across the green and was tracking from 20 feet away. It dropped to give him an Eagle and another wonderful shot.
Craig Evans took 3rd place with another superb knock - to keep his good form continuing - and came home with 38 points. Steve Evans, likewise, continued his superb form in 2015 and came in with a score that would ordinarily romp an event on any other given day. His debut victory chase continues, but can only be a matter of time with performances like this. 2nd place with 41 points is harsh but he should be extremely happy with where his game is at presently.
However, Andy Roper took the honours with probably his best ever round of golf. Fairway accuracy and greens in regulation both at 70% meant a decent score was always likely. Steady putting on greens that were quick and needed proper reads made a real difference as he 'lagged' beautifully so that most 2nd putts were simple 'gimmes'. This all combined saw him in with a superb score of 43 points and a well deserved 1st place.

Currently voted 2nd best course in Cheshire and the 48th best course in the UK, Delamere GC has an enviable reputation as one of the finest courses around.
Founded in 1910 and designed by the distinguished architect Herbert Fowler, Delamere Forest Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the finest traditional heathland golf courses in England. Delamere is often described as a ‘hidden gem’. Its rolling fairways are interspersed with heather and gorse, crowned by fast, subtle greens which are typical of Fowler’s early designs. As a result the course offers a fair but tough challenge.
Since its foundation Delamere has built strong links with the County, hosting the inaugural Cheshire County Meeting in 1921. In addition the annual Doris Chambers Ladies County Competition and the Boys’ Championship are held at the club, both of which have had their home at Delamere for many years.
In 2012 the club took the momentous decision to strengthen the course and reinstate its original heathland character. The renowned golf architects Mackenzie and Ebert who had recently completed the remodelling of Royal Lytham and St Annes for the Open Champiosnhip were commissioned to carry out the task. The work commenced in late 2012 and has been completed in time for the 2014 season. Every bunker has being returrned to the original Fowler design and all of the greens have been increased in size to provide additional pin placement options and run-off areas.
