SUNDAY 26TH JUNE 2016
FIRST TEE: 13:30PM
pairs winners
allan gannon & dave ashley
Our first pairs event of the season was held at the beautiful Childwall Golf Club in Liverpool on what was a drizzly and wet afternoon.
Coming off the back of his victory in "The High Tee Open", Allan Gannon was a man on fire. When paired with the "pre tournament bookies favourite", it was a partnership made in heaven [but looked more like hell!] They gelled well to post a great score of 44 points on the day - in some tough conditions and on a very tricky and demanding course. 25 points on the back 9 alone, shows what a tremendous performance it was! Congratulations to Allan Gannon and El Presidente, Dave Ashley. |
REVIEW OF THE DAY
Our first pairs event of 2016 took us to Childwall Golf Club in Liverpool to play this James Braid designed course.
On arrival we enjoyed soup and sandwiches overlooking the well-manicured course and as well as curing our appetite, it also whet it for what was to lie ahead.
Childwall is a beautiful parkland set up with tight fairways and penal rough that demands accuracy throughout all areas of play. Its main defences are the numerous bunkers scattered on every hole [I believe there are somewhere in the region of 85+ during the 18 holes] and the second cut of rough, which is thick and dense and tricky to play from – particularly in wet conditions [as we found out]
Despite some bad weather in the build-up to our visit, and on the day itself, the course played magnificently and the greens in particular were an absolute credit to the ground staff. Slick, quick and true rolling throughout – they were a joy to putt on [or 4 putt in one members case!]
At the draw for the pairings, there was a slight snigger when Phil Williams & Ste Holmes were draw out together. 18 holes later, 43 points in the bag and they were nestled nicely in 3rd place after a solid performance. In fact, it could have been better if Phil was able to count without the aid of an abacas and an incorrectly signed scorecard saw them hold onto 3rd.
Bobby Barrow and John Standley took a while to warm up, but when they did they were bombing them down the fairways and peppering the pins. This highlighted as John took nearest the pin on the 6th hole with a beautiful, laser like shot. 43 points wasn’t quite enough to take the top spot, but was a great score in tough conditions.
On the back of winning the last Bunkers event [and a Major event to boot], Allan Gannon was in fine fettle and brimming with confidence. When he was paired with the self-proclaimed, ‘pre-tournament bookies favourite’, Dave Ashley, it was met with a unanimous ‘ooooooooh’ from the lads as they knew it was a strong pairing. With Allan’s driver currently set to “arrow straight” and Dave’s deadly wedge play the pair stormed to 44 points and victory – with a back 9 of 25 points alone. Superb play and it was barely mentioned in the clubhouse [as you can imagine!]
John Morrison made a comeback after an injury lay off and ‘Ol Glass Back’ was showing signs of his best form with some delightful hybrids throughout his round.
‘The Unbeatables’ of Kev Givnan and Craig Evans had a day to forget as they stuttered to 37 points and just avoided last place despite most people thinking they could walk away with victory.
Andy Roper had a round to forget [again!] and consigned Graham Smith to consecutive ‘bog seat’ embarrassment. The driver was short once again the main cause for dismay, but coupled with a run of ‘shanks’ mid round and it was an unplayable combination. A nearest the pin on the 16th to within 4 feet gave a glimmer of a smile, but it was another round to forget with Graham finding fairways all day form the tee, but then his ball was like an opposing magnet to the greens on approach. Dead last – but at least they looked happy!

A firm favourite amongst members in 2014, Childwall Golf Club returns for 2016 with improvements a plenty since our last visit. In 2016 they are holding a World Amateur Golf Ranking Event, which follows on from the very successful England Golf Northern Boys Championship held in 2012..
Formed in 1912, Childwall Golf Club ranks with the very best courses in the area. This year they are holding a World Amateur Golf Ranking Event, which follows on from the very successful England Golf Northern Boys Championship held in 2012.
Childwall ranks with the very best of courses in this area of very fine Golf Clubs. The course design was based on the recommendation of James Braid and has, over the years, undergone some alterations, mainly to increase the length. Childwall Golf Club is a very tough test of Golf and can match any course. The course is not undulating and is very pleasant to walk.
There are practice nets and a superb putting area to warm up pre round and the club house and pro shop facilities are excellent.
