Bolton Golf Club presents a tricky test of golf in even the finest of conditions. Its hilltop location and undulations make it a true test of ability and on the day of our visit the heavens opened as we enjoyed a typical British Spring Day.
Despite the rainfall, the course played well, and in particular one member took the opportunity to take it to task. Ben finished on 42 stableford points - which given the blustery conditions was a fabulous knock. Solid play throughout his round - with consistency from the tee, steady iron work and plenty of craft around the greens made Ben the stand out performer on the day. Congratulations to today's winner - Ben Warden. |

review of the day
Written by Dave Ashley:
After enjoying an outstanding full English breakfast - served in our own private dining room - players made their way to the putting green and chipping areas to prepare for their first round on a course regarded by many as one of the best layouts in Lancashire. Bolton Golf Club was - judging by some of the scores - just about at its most challenging for this early season visit by the lads from Bunkers Golf Society. Unfortunately the outstanding views we hoped to enjoy of Winter Hill, South Lancashire and the Cheshire plains were somewhat obscured by the torrential rain and sleet which beat down on the group for most of the afternoon!
Despite the challenging conditions there were plenty of good scores though. Kev Murphy's creditable 36 points was good enough this week to take only 3rd place. This season's Mr. Consistent, Pete Bilson, despite playing under the pressure of his new handicap, did well to card 38 points and take second spot leaving the winner's prize to the ever optimistic Ben Warden with an excellent knock during which he amassed a tremendous haul of 42 points!
There were several players who breathed a great sigh of relief when after much post round banter and conjecture it was announced that the winner of the Loser's Toilet Seat Trophy was non other than the "Bookies pre-tournament favourite", the comical Dave Ashley. His hugely embarrassing 19 point haul was probably a couple of points more than he deserved!
This was a great day out at a course which all agreed would be nice to return to when conditions were a little more pleasant.
